ABSTRACT & FIGURATIVE ART

I was brought up in a very creative home, my father Jon, a singer songwriter and my mother Gill always encouraged my brother (one half of The Nextmen) and I to explore our creative sides in lots of different ways.

I always loved making art and had an amazing teachers at Hills Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge where I studied art at A Level, they were keen for me to go to art school but my more academic ambitions won over, and it is only in the last 10 years I have returned to any formal artistic practise. Pictured below is a very early Betmead, I must have been around 14, it’s still my favourite bridge in the world. Clare College Cambridge.

I wouldn’t have started again if it wasn’t for my wife Amelie who kept pointing to the art work in both my parents homes ‘This is really good, why did you stop and why don’t you start again?’.

I am so glad she kept pushing. It brings so much joy.

My work is born of an exploration of shapes and sequence. Of capturing the essence of what I see and feel.  I go where I feel like going in the moment, sometimes I have an idea, other times one comes as I work. I make two broad types of art: Big ‘Triptychs’ (sets of three) usually in double or triple density charcoal. I also do more figurative work, most commonly where land meets sea.

I occasionally do large murals (averaging around 3 X 4.5 metres, you can see examples recent examples of all these below.

FIGURATIVE WORK

This place has been an important part of my life for much of my life, but every time I return it takes my breath away, February 2024 was no different.
